Project Save Her Hand: Giving a Seven-Year-Old Back Her Future

Every child deserves the chance to learn, to play, to write, and to dream with both hands. Amarachi Okere is seven years old, and right now she cannot.

In Nguru, in the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, this little girl suffered a devastating hot water burn that severely damaged one of her hands. The injury was so severe that it left bone exposed and made it almost impossible for her to use the hand for the ordinary business of being a child. Holding a pencil. Playing with friends. Doing the small, everyday things that seven-year-olds are supposed to take entirely for granted. The wound has reached far past her skin. It has reached into her education, her confidence, her childhood, and her sense of what her life can be.

Ugoevo Care Foundation found her, and we could not look away.

We came across Amarachi during one of our humanitarian outreaches, and the moment we understood her situation, we took up her case as an emergency medical intervention. We sat with her family, as we always do, and confirmed the painful truth at the heart of so much preventable suffering: they simply could not afford the specialised treatment their daughter needed to save her hand. The care existed. It was just priced out of the reach of the people who needed it most. That gap, between a treatable injury and a family who cannot pay, is exactly where this Foundation was built to stand.

So we began. To move from crisis to a real plan, the Foundation sponsored a medical CT scan assessment and an X-ray examination to establish precisely how deep the damage went and what it would take to reverse it. This was not sympathy in the abstract. It was the first concrete, funded step toward giving a child her hand back.

The findings gave us both a warning and a way forward. The X-ray confirmed that Amarachi requires corrective surgery to restore the function of her hand and, just as importantly, to prevent a permanent disability that would follow her for the rest of her life. There is a window here, and it will not stay open forever. Acting now can restore her. Waiting risks locking in a lifelong impairment that surgery today could still prevent. Understanding the urgency, the Foundation has engaged a qualified surgeon at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, who is now overseeing further evaluation and preparing for the procedure itself.

From the first consultation to the last day of recovery, she will not walk this road alone.
